Critical transition to a non-chaotic regime in isotropic turbulence

چکیده

We study the properties of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in higher spatial dimensions through lens chaos predictability using numerical simulations. employ both direct simulations (DNS) calculations Eddy Damped Quasi Normal Markovian (EDQNM) closure approximation. Our results show a remarkable transition to non-chaotic regime above critical dimension $d_c\approx 5.88$. relate these energy cascade as function context idea for where Kolmogorov's 1941 theory becomes exact.

Scalar variance decay in chaotic advection and Batchelor-regime turbulence.

The decay of the variance of a diffusive scalar in chaotic advection flow (or equivalently Batchelor-regime turbulence) is analyzed using a model in which the advection is represented by an inhomogeneous baker's map on the unit square. The variance decays exponentially at large times, with a rate that has a finite limit as the diffusivity kappa tends to zero and is determined by the action of t...

Understanding the sub-critical transition to turbulence in wall flows

Contrasting with free shear flows presenting velocity profiles with inflection points which cascade to turbulence in a relatively mild way, wall bounded flows are deprived of (inertial) instability modes at low Reynolds numbers and become turbulent in a much wilder way, most often marked by the coexistence of laminar and turbulent domains at intermediate Reynolds numbers, well below the range w...

The semiclassical regime of the chaotic quantum-classical transition.

An analysis of the semiclassical regime of the quantum-classical transition is given for open, bounded, one-dimensional chaotic dynamical systems. Environmental fluctuations-characteristic of all realistic dynamical systems-suppress the development of a fine structure in classical phase space and damp nonlocal contributions to the semiclassical Wigner function, which would otherwise invalidate ...

Critical behavior at the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition in a bent-core liquid crystal.

Magnetic birefringence and dynamic light scattering measurements of orientational order parameter fluctuations at the isotropic-nematic phase transition of a bent-core liquid crystal reveal a pretransitional temperature dependence consistent with the standard Landau-deGennes mean field theory. However, as follows: the transition in the bent-core compound is more weakly first order (TNI-T* appro...

Turbulence–flame interactions in lean premixed hydrogen: transition to the distributed burning regime

The response of lean (φ 0.4) premixed hydrogen flames to maintained homogeneous isotropic turbulence is investigated using detailed numerical simulation in an idealised three-dimensional configuration over a range of Karlovitz numbers from 10 to 1562. In particular, a focus is placed on turbulence sufficiently intense that the flames can no longer be considered to be in the thin reaction burnin...
